***COURTESY POST*** Dixie is currently at Humane Society Calumet Area in Munster, Indiana and is looking for a foster or forever home. 'Dixie is a very sweet and goofy 1 year 9 month old girl. She is spayed, up to date on vaccines, heartworm tested negative, and current on flea/tick and heartworm prevention. Dixie does have some behavior issues which is why she hasn't been able to find her forever home yet, but she has shown improvement with these issues as well. She can be fearful when meeting new people and if approached too quickly or made to feel cornered, can display some fear aggression. However, she has been working really hard to ... (Read More)get more comfortable meeting new people and does well when the people offer her lots of treats and allow her to choose when she is ready for their attention. Once Dixie is comfortable with you, she is a huge goofball and couch potato. She enjoys working for treats, knows the sit and down commands, likes doing food puzzles, and most of all, loves playing with tennis balls. Additionally, Dixie has done really well here at the shelter with other dogs in playgroups. She would be a fantastic companion and friend to a home willing to be patient and continue working with her. If you have any additional questions or would like more information, feel free to contact Jenna Jones via e-mail at behavior@hscalumet.org or by calling the shelter at 219-922-3811.' (Less)

Meet Toby! Toby is a purebred Presa Canario and is just over a year old. He is a big boy and will need a breed experienced owner. Toby is truly a sweetheart and loves people. A fenced in yard will be required and adopters must be willing to continue training with him. Toby is house broken, crate trained and good with most dogs. Older children would be best as he is a horse and has no clue at how strong he truly is. Toby just wants a loving forever home. Could you give that to sweet boy Toby? Interested In Toby?     Sorry to say we need to find a new home for our 3 year old female English Mastiff. She needs to be in a loving home where she is the only dog. She's a beautiful brindle with a loving soul. She's a petite mastiff standing about as tall as a golden retriever. For whatever reason she's recently gotten into it with our male and female mastiffs. We love her dearly and are very upset that we have to do this. She is very loyal and loves to sit on the couch and cuddle. She is better with women than men, however her and I (male) has a very strong bond. She just takes time to warm up to men she isn't familiar with.

Mastiff Mix    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Not Good w/ Other Dogs, Not Good w/ Cats, Good w/ Adult Women Only
Personality: Average Energy, Submissive
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

This beautiful, gentle girl is Macy. She is about 2 yrs old and 50lbs. We believe she is a shar-pei/bull mastiff possibly pit mix. When we heard this girl's sad story, we felt we had to take her and find her a loving home. Macy was a stray. For 6 months she was seen wandering the streets of a small southern housing community, looking for food & shelter. No one knew where she had come from. And no one cared. Eventually she became pregnant and had a litter of puppies outdoors, only one survived. She stuck by her baby day and night. People would throw her food but no one would help this homeless mom. A rescue stepped in to take her ... (Read More)and the puppy but never showed up. Finally a family in the area agreed to take the puppy, but not mom. But she found her baby and would come back day after day and lay outside the house where it was, even breaking into the porch where it was kenneled so she could lay beside it. This went on for several months until animal control was called. They caught this poor momma dog and took her to the local shelter. But you can't stop a mother's love. That night she broke out of the outside pen and went back to her baby. Again, AC was called and she was taken back to the shelter and put in a secure indoor pen. Her fate seemed sealed until a rescuer stepped in and freed her. Then she came to us. Her eyes were sad. We so wanted to give her back her baby, just for a while. But her fosters loved on her, got her spayed, vetted and healthy. The best thing for Macy, we knew, would be to find a loving home soon. She loves the rescues puppies, I'm sure they remind her of her own. She's shy and not very trusting of other dogs, although she did arrive at the rescue with an energetic male dog that she tolerated. She would much rather be held and cuddled than be out playing with the other dogs. She is very afraid of men, probably due to the shelter situation. She does warm up to them but it takes time. She is house and crate trained. You couldn't ask for a sweeter girl! Her adoption fee is $100, to help cover her vetting expenses. Please email for an application. souldogrr@gmail.com. (Less)

Mastiff Mix    Age: Puppy

Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

Meet Nugget! Nugget is a big goof and is unaware of his size. He makes friends easily and loves to play! His favorite pass times are playing and eating. He is a very smart boy and picks things up quickly. Once Nugget has had his daily exercise he calms down fairly easy. Nugget would love an active home maybe with another dog or two. He is cat selective and older children would probably be best as he is very clumsy and can easily knock a small child down unintentionally. He is crate trained and house broken. Mastiff    Age: Puppy

Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

Samson (Sammy) is a purebred Presa Canario. He will need a large breed experienced owner. He is a goofball who is unaware of his size. He enjoys walks, and playing with his foster siblings in the home. He is a happy go lucky dog without a care in the world. He is your typical big dog. If you can't handle slobber he is not your dog! Sammy is very food motivated and loves to go for outings. Sammy is housebroken, but crates tend to scare him. He does better in an open area. Sammy needs a home with another dog for company. He is close to 100 pounds and has a ways to go. He is extremely strong and will need continued leash training. However, he ... (Read More)does great off leash. Sammy is good with cats, dogs and children. Keep in mind Sammy does not know his size and may easily knock over a small child without meaning to. This is an intelligent, protective breed that makes a good guard dog but is unlikely to attack unless severely provoked. Mastiffs behave well with children but should be watched with little ones because of their large size. Mastiffs need gentle training and socialization from an early age. Mastiffs can live in an apartment or a home with a small yard.
