|Rescue Me ID: 16-08-29-00008Duncan (male)|
We want you to meet Duncan. He is a 3 year old Mastiff mix who isn't a real large guy at only 44 pounds. He was labeled as 'fractious' in a shelter in Tennessee and their intent was to kill him because of how he was acting. He would sit in a corner of his shelter and shake - he refused to make eye contact and would growl when people tried to catch him with a control pole. Most animals are terrifed when they get dumped in a shelter and you add someone with no compassion coming at you with a pole and noose on it and what would you expect? We literally agreed to take him the hour he was schedule to die. He got transported by two individuals to us and he has NEVER looked back. He has made progress every single day and is now trusting most of the shelter volunteers. He will go in and out to the exercise yards with now issues and he actually comes to his gate to greet you now. By day five with us he was able to go home with Linda Heyden to be fostered. He gets along GREAT with all of her dogs (both large and small) and is did good with her cat. He is crate trained and housebroken. He has one bad habit (if it is bad) that he wants to jump up and give kisses. Pretty amazing for a dog that was labeled as having to die because he was too fractious. It is amazing to us that so many amazing dogs aren't given the chance at life because people are just too darn lazy to give the poor animal a chance to get over being terrified of being in a shelter. No one will ever be able to tell us that a dog doesn't know when it is on death row versus in a place that will love and care for it instead of waiting for it's number to come up to be killed. Duncan is safe with us and we will find him an amazing home who will cherish him and he will never again find himself sitting on death row - that is our promise to any dog that comes to us. UPDATE: Duncan is doing pretty amazing around here. He is back at the shelter and doing well socializing with humans. We believe he is now ready to transition to a permanent home. (Less)

Mastiff Dogs can make good pets in Iowa if they match your IifestyIe. The Old English Mastiff is a massive breed. Mastiffs are very gentle toward their families. This is an intelligent, protective breed that makes a good guard dog but is unlikely to attack unless severely provoked. Mastiffs behave well with children but should be watched with little ones because of their large size. Mastiffs need gentle training and socialization from an early age. Mastiffs can live in an apartment or a home with a small yard.
