Rescue Me ID: 16-02-06-00354Sterling (male)

Mastiff Mix    Age: Young Adult

Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

Sterling is a Mastiff mix with a gorgeous short steel grey coat. Sterling was originally brought to AAR as a puppy with a severely hurt leg. A wonderful volunteer fostered him while we had his leg amputated. He healed quickly and it never slowed him down! He was adopted and has spent the last year in a home with other dogs (small). His adopter had to move into an apartment so couldn't keep all her dogs. This big boy is a big, strong, lovable hunk of joy and excitement. Sterling walks nicely on a leash and is very sociable and loves all the volunteers who care for him. He is untested with cats. Sterling is house trained. Young, Male, Not known

Rescue Me ID: 16-01-22-00622Ms. Dorthy (female)

Mastiff Mix    Age: Young Puppy

Health: Needs to be Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Hi world! My name is Ms. Dorthy and I'm a new K-9 Angel. This nice lady came and took me to her house last night and I'm so excited to be away from the puppy prison! My foster mom gave me a silly name because she said I reminded her of this really funny girl she knows. So I guess my foster mom thinks I must be pretty cool too! I'm just figuring out the rules around here, but so far I've had no accidents in the house!! I'm a little shy of my foster brother right now - he's a puppy too and jumps all over me, but my foster sister is bigger than me so I might try to play with her first. Foster mom has these really cool things called toys all ... (Read More)over her house. I'm just learning what those are so foster mom can't wait till I want to play with them! I'll fill everyone in on how I'm doing once I get settled in. So far foster mom says I'm just a big, sweet beautiful love bug! Ms. Dorthy is a mastiff/pit mix. She's about 2 months old and approximately 22 pounds. She is new to our program so we will update her bio once we get to know her a little better. Ms. Dorthy won't be at our adoption center until she has had her second set of shots but if you are interested in adopting Ms. Dorthy or any of our pups an application is required. The application can be found on our website through this link http://www.k-9angelsrescue.org/adoption_process_k-9_angels_rescue.html PUPPIES: Young puppies that have not had their second round of puppy shots will not be at the Adoption Center for our weekend adoption events. If you are interested in adopting a puppy, please fill out an application on our website http://www.k-9angelsrescue.org/adoption_process_k-9_angels_rescue.html. If your application is approved, a meeting can be arranged. Also, we only adopt young puppies locally due to the 4 month timeframe it takes to get them fully vetted and altered. OUT OF STATE ADOPTIONS: We do allow out-of-state adoptions for dogs, however, the adopter MUST come to Houston to get the dog and take the dog home with them. We do not allow our dogs to be shipped. However, we only adopt young puppies locally, due to the 4 month timeframe it takes to get them fully vetted and altered. SPAY/NEUTER: As we believe proper healthcare of one's pet is a requirement of good ownership K-9 Angels Rescue only adopts out dogs that have been fully vetted. If the dog being adopted is not already altered at the time of their adoption, the dog will be altered within 2 weeks of adoption at our vet at our cost, with the exception of puppies which will be altered as soon as the puppy is ready. ADOPTION FEE: $200 (includes spay/neuter, shots, microchip, medicines and other medical procedures, if necessary) ADOPTION CENTER: 5533 Weslayan St. in the Weslayan Plaza Shopping Center Houston, TX 77005 HOURS: Saturdays 10 AM - 6 PM and Sundays 11 AM - 3:30 PM NOTE: All dogs are officially the property of K-9 Angels Rescue until they are altered by our veterinarian.     Fee covers only a portion of rescuing the next dumped dog Big Dixie / Mostly Anatolian Sheppard Dog / Dixie is large dog with fluid movements and a calm temperament. I am off to Christmas vacation and Big Dixie is staying home with our caretaker for the ranch. I will be back after the first of the year but I thought I would post so you might ponder choosing her if you are shopping during the Christmas break. She is well muscled with a strong head. The breed was developed to protect livestock. Her eye markings look like mastiff or the eyes of the dog pictured below. She does shed some. Dixie kennels well and comes on command. She does not ... (Read More)have struggles with other dogs to be the alpha. She stretches out to run and has run over and rolled smaller dogs a few times. Though insulted they jump up and try unsuccessfully to catch up. I have always owned dogs and other animals. I had a career in education and recreation, serving in many capacities. I began dog rescue as a librarian when I asked children what kind of summer program they would like and they chose dog rescue, dog training, and dog therapy. I sold Labrador retrievers and Jack Russell terriers before I became a dog rescuer and realized that until a lot of change occurs in the attitude of those who abuse and abandon dogs there is no need to be a breeder, there are planet of excellent dogs available that need help. I now live in land adjoining the Big Thicket National Preserve one of our National parks and a designated International Biosphere Reserve by the United Nations in 1981. While it is a land of magical plants and wildlife it is also an area of Texas which had great prosperity through nearby oil, offshore, and refinery jobs that no longer exist. With a populace not yet ready to understand the need for an education the middle class is shrinking, more people are renters, few programs exist for low cost spay and neuter, and many fine animals are dumped. Dixie came onto our property at about 6 weeks old and put her paws on the fence to be let in. She is easy to doctor and will roll into your lap for nail trimming although she is very frightened by it. She is shy and timid. Corrections can be done by displeased voice. I am in my 60s and have become overwhelmed with the number of dogs dumped I need to place some so I can foster more. Dixie has been spayed, has her shots, and is on heart worm medicine. One caution exists concerning small yappy biting dogs. I own several Jack Russell terriers who often swipe in and bite a large dog on the rear flank or attack over food. While Dixie has no first engagement fighting instinct she has pierced the ear of Kyle for nipping her on the rear one too many times. As shephard she has a protection instinct for herself and her pack. She is as protective of her human family as if she were guarding a heard of sheep. 409 4549619 (Less)

Mastiff Mix    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Good with Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Very Submissive
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

I am off to Christmas vacation and Footie is staying home with our caretaker for the ranch. I will be back after the first of the year but I thought I would post so you might ponder choosing him if you are shopping during the Christmas break. None of the pictures are able to show the dance of his step as he has pleased you or the push of his giant head as he nussles against you for loving. Adoption fee used to neuter other strays: covers only a portion of cost to rescue. Big Foot or Footie I have always owned dogs and other animals. I had a career in education and recreation, serving in many capacities. I began dog rescue as a librarian ... (Read More)when I asked children what kind of summer program they would like and they chose dog rescue, dog training, and dog therapy. Footie's mother was dumped and she slipped into the woods to try to raise a litter of puppies as she competed with coyotes, wolves, raccoons, bobcats and other for food. Footie came out of the woods one day and crawled under my car for shade with his skin a mass of gooey gray matter that smelled foul. I took him the vet, Tom Granger, a college friend from Texas A & M University. I said 'We will have to put him down, won't we?' He replied no 'I will supply the medicine - you cure him'. I said 'What is he?' He replied 'A black dog.' Footie grew to be no average black dog. His name denotes big feet which led to a massive body. I looked at breeds and he may be a bangdogge or bulldog bred with a mastiff. In the big thicket people will have enough money and create an idea of having a great hunting dog, say a hog hunting dog, pay a lot then come on hard times and drop them in the woods. One of the characteristics footie has in common with the bangdogge and mastiff is low rank drive. Footie can be dominated by a bossy Jack Russell, or dachshund. He is person oriented rather than hunting making him easy to keep up with on a walk or in the yard. He is loyal and protective of the family and the dog pack but very responsive to discipline. He can be disciplined with a raised voice or a spank with a rolled up paper. He pushes his face against you, leans in, and falls against to cuddle or curl up and sleep. He loves to sleep in the bed but will sleep in a pallet on the floor or kennel. He is so soft heated and tender he has to be gently doctored if he has a wound. He is a fine, beautiful, loving massive black dog with a little white on his chest. He has made two errors in judgment in the whole period at Queen Oaks. Once when another dog chased the family goat he caught it by the nose and held it until he got roughly hollered at, releasing and slinking off to hide for whole day. On another occasion, the smaller dogs were chasing a small terrier, as all ran past him. He interpreted his job as a catch dog again and snagged the passing Jack Russell Terrier. Upon command he released; the terrier was bruised but ok. He is magnificent; I did not offer him for adoption locally because I was afraid someone would try to fight him, due to his size not realizing his gentle, almost fragile nature. He is all about trying to please, obey, and be part of the family. Smaller dogs can curl up and sleep against him or leaning their heads on him. (Less)

Maddie now needs the perfect forever family to give her the love she so desperately wants and deserves. She is already crate trained. She LOVES toys...all toys! She loves to fetch and adores snuggling! Kisses and belly rubs are a must! Maddie can be dog selective and needs thoughtful introductions. She ... (Read More)seems to do best with larger males. She does do well with children, but due to her size we suggest older children only. Someone who knows and understands this breed would be best for her. Mastiff Mix    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Good with Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Spayed

Meet Ava! She is a playful, loving, and very loyal Dogo Argentino. She's typical of a Dogo in that she can be calm and gentle and also very excitable at times. Ava loves car rides and meeting new people, and is well mannered when in public. She does great on walks, though will excitedly pull at the beginning, then fall into a calm pace. Ava came to us as a hot mess! She had been in a hoarding situation for over a year without medical care and was suffering from mange, secondary skin infections, and entropion (inverted eyelids). Now that she is past her eye surgery and she is feeling better overall, her puppy side is here! At the age of 2 1/2 ... (Read More)years old, Ava is finally truly getting to enjoy life. Ava is house and crate trained, will sit and make eye contact for food and treats, and would benefit from some training for manners - something her new family can do and use as a bonding experience. Her 'special needs' are her sensitive skin and allergies. The foster family along with Ava's dermatologist have figured out what will work for her and it is in Ava's best interest to have her adoptive family continue the care she is currently receiving. It is so rewarding to have helped Ava become the happy and healthy girl she is today. Now to find her the perfect family!     **Be sure to check out her video** Jersey is a great companion that is a laid back, affectionate, smart, social butterfly that loves kids, woman, men and dogs. She is very motivated by human companionship but loves playing dogs. She has an alpha personality in the dog pack so to prevent constant competition with another alpha female, she needs a home without one. Her current foster home has 8 other dogs of all ages, both sexes, sizes and temperaments, and Jersey gets along with them all of them, but does sometimes butt heads with the established alpha female. Right now her foster home has a doggy door and she loves it because she loves to go outside (as long as the weather is not over 90 and not under 50) often and hang out with or without her fellow foster dogs. She comes when called and is very obedient. She is great in the car, loves to go on walks, enjoys going to dog friendly social events and LOVES the dog park. She loves hugs, kisses and rub downs and is a great snuggler. She is crated when her foster mom is at work from 7:15-5:15. She sleeps where she wants to at night which is either on a dog bed or in her foster mom's bed. She is estimated to be 2 years old and she currently weights 83 lbs.     Rocko was adopted in 2014 and two years later his owners decided they didn't want him any more and turned him into a shelter. We got him back because of his microchip. Rocko is a wonderful dog. He is a chocolate lab and mastiff mix now around 3 years old. He is a big boy weighing 80+ pounds. Rocko is fairly well-behaved - he knows how to sit. He is very active and playful and loves to play with other dogs. He has a big bark. Rocko LOVES water and lies in his wading pool. Getting sprayed with the water hose doesn't phase him either. Rocko needs a permanent forever home with a family who will give him love and lots of attention with any ... (Read More)additional training he may need. He needs LOTS of exercise and another female canine playmate would be good. We want Rocko to be allowed in the house and a loved member of the family, with a large fenced yard where he can run and play. Rocko has been neutered. He is fully vaccinated and microchipped. Animal ID: KM-VegasVegas (male)

Mastiff Mix    Age: Young Adult

Personality: Average Energy, Very Dominant
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

Vegas is the most loveable knucklehead I've ever been around!! An 85lb Shar Pei/Bull Mastiff mix, around 3 years old, Vegas needs a patient, strong-willed owner who understands his hard headed ways. Vegas is a dominant male with a lot of Mochismo. He walks with his head high & shoulders back and everyone he comes across knows Vegas is The Man! Once you get to know him, he is really just a big teddy bear, who loves to cuddle and looks for your approval & satisfaction in everything he does. Vegas is full of energy and would do best with an active family or even with a job of his own, whether that's protecting a property (would do best on a ... (Read More)large property with a big perimeter to patrol) or managing a shop or warehouse all day. Vegas is a great companion dog!! He was rescued at the last minute from Death Row in a Houston shelter TWICE, bounced around between temporary fosters & boarding until a spot opened up with his current foster, in November 2011, where he received the obedience training he needed. After a LOT of physical & emotional rehab, clearing up his medical issues and ongoing training, Vegas is more than ready to go to a forever home of his own. He's a dog that will bond with you deeply and never leave your side. He gets along great with people but will need to be monitored around other dominant males and very submissive or insecure females. He loves to play rough with other dogs (wrestle at a high level) so larger dogs would be ideal. He needs more stimulation (human & dog interactions, walks, play time, personal attention, etc) that his foster can currently provide. Can you give Vegas the home he deserves? (Less)

PIease Read Before Adopting a Mastiff in Texas
Mastiff Dogs can make good pets in Texas if they match your IifestyIe. The Old English Mastiff is a massive breed. Mastiffs are very gentle toward their families. This is an intelligent, protective breed that makes a good guard dog but is unlikely to attack unless severely provoked. Mastiffs behave well with children but should be watched with little ones because of their large size. Mastiffs need gentle training and socialization from an early age. Mastiffs can live in an apartment or a home with a small yard.
